HOLY YOGA
CHAPTER TWO
SAMKHYA YOGA OR THE YOGA OF KNOWLEDGE
VERSE NUMBER 69

yaa nisaa sarvabhootaanaam jaagarti samymt
yasyaam jaagrati bhootaani saa nisaa pasyato muneh
Text in English:
That which is night to all beings, in that the disciplined
man wakes; that in which all beings wake, is night to the Atman-cognizing Muni.
COMMENTARY BY SWAMI CHIDBHAVANANDA:
The faculty of seeing varies with beings in the physical
plane. While man is able to see distinctly in broad daylight, owls and tigers
are not able to do so. Day is therefore virtually night to them; and what is
night to man actually serves as day to them. For, they then discern well. Day and
night as physical facts are one thing and as of practical value quite another
for beings differently constituted.
Men are not all wakeful to the same thing. A thief is well
posted with particulars in his field, while the rest are all hidden in darkness
to him. To a gambler his game is as bright as day, other concerns being
enshrouded as if in darkness. The learned see well into the literary world unmindful
of everything else. The same world opens up different vistas to different
people in accordance with their dispositions. To people who are sense-bound
things earthly are all real and they are immersed in them; they are wakeful to
the mundane. To the Brahma-jnani, on the other hand, who has conquered the
senses and who has awakened to divine consciousness, the spectacle is
different. His intuition, his concepts, the spectacle is different. His
intuition, his concepts, his precepts are all filled in with divinity. Whatever
is, is Brahman to him. He cognizes existence as Brahman and not as the mundane.
According to the attainment, beings are attuned to different planes of
Existence. The Enlightened one is in the finale of It.
SRI RAMAKRISHNA AS QUOTED BY CHIDBHAVANANDA:
With the realisation of God everything undergoes
transformation to the jnani. It is God Himself that has become the phenomenal
universe and all the beings in it. The son is then perceived as the boy
Krishna. Father and mother undergo metamorphosis as the Divinity. The wife is
no more his mate; he sees the Cosmic Mother in her. Recognizing God in all,
adoration to him takes place through the worshipful service of all.
COMMENTARY BY DR.S. RADHAKRISHNAN:
When all beings are attracted by the glitter of
sense-objects, the sage is intent on understanding reality. He is wakeful to
the nature of reality to which the unwise is asleep or indifferent. The life of
opposites which is the day or condition of activity for the unenlightened is
night, a darkness of the soul to the wise. Cp. Goethe: Error stands in the same
relation to truth as sleeping to waking.
COMMENTARY BY SWAMI SIVANANDA:
That which is real for the worldly-minded people is illusion
for the sage, and vice versa. The sage lives in the self. This is day for him.
He is unconscious of the worldly phenomena. They are night for him, as it were.
The ordinary man is unconscious of his real nature. Life in the spirit is night
for him. This is day for him. The self is a non-entity for him! For a sage this
world is a nonentity.
The worldly-minded people are in utter darkness as they have
no knowledge of the Self. What is darkness for them is all light for the sage. The
Self, Atma or Brahman is night for the worldly-minded persons. But the sage is
fully awake. He is directly cognising the supreme Reality, the Light of lights.
He is full of illumination and Atma-Jnana or knowledge of the Self.
Comments by the blogger:
Night and day stand here for ignorance and knowledge
respectively. The Atma-cognizing Muni is not bothered about wherefrom his next
meal would come. So he is not bothered about the yogakshama. Here yoga stands
for getting at things, earning money, and kshama stands for keeping what is earned.
For the Muni there is neither earning money and buying things and providing for
the family. So he is little bothered about yogakshama. For him all the
endeavours taken by worldly-minded people is unknown or night. For him the whole
universe is a beautiful thought of the Creator. Atman alone is real. For the
worldly people, Atman means little, and he is bothered much about earning and worldly
things and keeping it. For him this universe is not a thought, beautiful or
otherwise, everything here is real and the worldly life alone is real, and he
is ignorant to the Self-culture.
TAHT APART, THE BEAUTY OF THE GITA IS LORD KRISHNA PROVIDES
THE WAY OUT FOR BOTH THE WORLDLY PEOPLE AND THE MUNI. RAJA YOGA AND JNANA YOGA
MEANS LITTLE TO THE WORLDLY. BUT THE MUNI THRIVES IN IT. AND EVEN AN ORDINARY
MAN AND WOMAN CAN INDULGE IN BHAKTI YOGA, AND WITH A LITTLE DISCRIMINATION,
KARMA YOGA. SO GOD IS COMPASSIONATE TO BOTH THE MUNI AND THE WORLDLY PEOPLE.
WHILE THE MUNI CAN PERFECT HIMSELF THROUGH JNANA YOGA AND RAJA YOGA, THE
WORLDLY CAN PERFECT HIMSELF THROUGH BAKHTI YOGA AND KARMA YOGA. THIS IS THE
BEAUTY OF THE HINDUISM WHICH HAS BEEN ABLE TO DISCERN THE LORD AS TRUTH AS WELL
AS COMPASSION AND BLISS, IN OTHER WORDS, satchitananda. SO WE ALL GOT CHANCES
COUNTLESS TO PERFECT OURSELVES AND NO SOULD IS CONDEMNED TO HELL FOR EVER.
EMANCIPATION IS THE RIGHT OF EVERY SOUL. THIS TRUTH IS REVEALED BY THE ANCIENT
MUNIS AND SAGES OF INDIA!
